| "Foamy" macrophage formation may be the key to persistence of infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent of tuberculosis, explains a new study in PLoS Pathogens. These immunity-related cells are shown to be a safety reservoir where the bacterium can hide for years in infected individuals, before inducing an active disease. | |

| • | Dynorphin inhibits NEP activity in R1.1 mouse thymoma cells |
| NEP/CALLA or CD10 is an endopeptidase (E.C. 3.4.24.11) that inactivates numerous neuropeptides, including dynorphin. Dynorphin is an endogenous opioid polypeptide that binds to [kappa]-opioid receptors with greatest affinity. R1.1 mouse thymoma cells highly express [kappa]-opioid receptors. In this study, on R1.1 cells, NEP activity was inhibited by [kappa]-opioid polypeptide dynorphin (10-8-10-6 M) and by thiorphan (2 × 10-4 M), a known inhibitor of NEP (30 min treatment). NEP inhibition by dynorphin was stronger than by thiorphan. A non-opioid opioid mechanism of action was mostly involved in this inhibition. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. | |

| • | Triplantanol increases plant cell growth |
| Plants that are growing most vigorously exhibit the most noticeable effect on leaf growth. There can be both length and width increases in plant leaves. This is often accompanied by increased thickness and robustness. Leaves can become more fuller and more rounded according to leaf form and plant type. See the pictues on our site (Bigger leaves) showing how leaf shape has been changed in Geraneum plants | |
